DR RICHARD HEMMINGS

Composer / Improvisor

Richard drumming One way of describing what I do is the use of modern classical music techniques in popular music; however, I also use free improvisation in composition. I don't think about sticking to a genre, it's more about what I want to hear and how I can achieve it. This way I can combine a dance track with the elements of an avant garde composer like Conlon Nancarrow. Usually, it sounds ugly and/or ridiculous and irritates music industry professionals who don't understand why anyone would want to listen to it.

In contrast, with regard to offers of freelance work, I can confidently write in most genres and copy styles as desired! I have a number of tools at my disposal including MAX/MSP, Sibelius 4 and Digital Performer. If you are interested in hiring me to compose some music, do not hesitate to contact me.

Richard improvisingAs far as improvisation goes, Ben Watson, the former music critic of that most celebrated jazz magazine 'The Wire' once commented that my style is derived from rock rather than jazz. He's possibly right because I don't swing much when I improvise. I prefer to be more abstract: a kind of Kurt Schwitters but on the drums... I have performed in London, Rome, New York and even Leicester!
